Compare the NiSi Starter and Professional filter kits for Sony RX100VI and RX100VII. See what each includes and which suits your shooting style.

Quick answer

Choose the Starter Kit if you mainly need a graduated ND and polarizer for landscapes. Choose the Professional Kit if you also want a solid ND and a natural night filter for long exposures and low-light city scenes.

What the extra filters in the Professional Kit actually do

The Professional Kit adds two filters that change what you can shoot: an ND8 (0.9) 3-stop solid ND and a Natural Night filter. The ND8 cuts light across the whole frame, which lets you use slower shutter speeds for motion blur or wider apertures in bright conditions. The Natural Night filter is designed to reduce color casts from artificial lighting, making it useful for twilight and night cityscapes. The Starter Kit includes only the Medium GND8 (0.9) 3-stop graduated filter and HD Polarizer, so it covers scenes with bright skies and reflections but not full-frame light reduction or night color correction.

Shared hardware and compatibility

Both kits use the same aluminium alloy filter holder, which holds up to two square filters and rotates 360 degrees. That means you can stack a graduated filter and a polarizer, or combine the ND8 with the polarizer, and adjust the graduation angle independently. Both include a carry case and a free pouch. Importantly, both are only compatible with the Sony RX100 VI (M6) and RX100 VII (M7); they do not fit earlier RX100 models. If you own a different RX100 generation, neither kit is suitable.

Price difference and value

The Starter Kit is priced at USD 60.35 (compared to a USD 85.00 list price), while the Professional Kit is USD 73.60 (compared to USD 115.00). The difference of about USD 13 buys you two additional filters. If you would otherwise buy an ND8 and a Natural Night filter separately, the Professional Kit is the more economical way to get them. However, if you rarely use solid ND or shoot at night, that extra outlay may be unnecessary.

Key trade-offs

  • Filter coverage vs. simplicity: The Starter Kit keeps your bag light and your workflow simple with two filters. The Professional Kit adds two more filters, giving you more creative control but requiring you to manage and stack additional glass. Decide whether you prefer a minimal kit or maximum flexibility.
  • Cost vs. future expansion: The Professional Kit costs about USD 13 more than the Starter Kit. If you later decide you need an ND8 or Natural Night filter, buying them separately may cost more than the difference. Consider your likely future needs before choosing.
  • Compatibility check: Both kits fit only the Sony RX100 VI and RX100 VII. Confirm your camera model before ordering; neither kit works with other RX100 versions. Verify your camera model to avoid a return.
